Metabiota, a San Francisco-based developer of epidemic prediction and prevention software, has raised $30 million in Series A funding. Metabiota uses an interesting mix of technologies and approaches – Big Data analytics, geographic information system (GIS), human intelligence (Humint) on the ground, open source intelligence (Osint) and biodetection techniques, to map and predict epidemic outbreaks.
There were times when In-Q-Tel, a venture arm of CIA, was actively seeking and funding companies like Metabiota. Nowdays In-Q-Tel focuses mostly on digital solutions – mobile, IoT, cybersecurity. In the scenario of widely overestimated influenza pandemic 2009–2010 Metabiota software could provide a valuable second opinion.
