Apple put a microphone on your wrist that listens continuously, holds the last fifteen seconds of whatever was said near you, and can write a summary of the conversation you just had. That shipped on Wednesday, in the Apple Watch Series 12 at $399 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799, both unchanged in price from last year’s models. Pre-orders opened the same day and the watches reach stores on Friday, September 18. Apple calls the feature set Audio Intelligence, and the engineering that deserves attention has very little to do with the intelligence part.
What Live Rewind and Siri Recap actually do
Live Rewind is the simpler of the two. Double-press the Digital Crown and the watch shows you the previous fifteen seconds of conversation as a text snippet. You can ask Siri about what it says, or save it into the new Siri app for later. Apple’s framing is the moment where someone says a name, an address, or a dosage and you did not quite catch it, which is a real problem and a plausible reason to build this.
Siri Recap is the ambitious one. Turn it on and Apple Intelligence generates a title and a set of key points after a conversation ends, filed in the Siri app. This is a note-taking assistant that runs on a device most people wear all day, in rooms with people who did not buy it. Both features arrive in beta late in 2026, in English first, and require an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone 16 or later, excluding the 16e. Neither will be available in the EU at launch. Sound Recognition, which alerts deaf and hard of hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells and a baby crying without needing the iPhone nearby, ships in the same bundle and is the least contentious thing in it.
The people who did not consent
Every previous ambient-recording product has failed on the same problem. The wearer opts in. Everyone else in the room does not, and usually does not know the device exists. Google Glass died of this. The various AI pendants and pins of the last two years have not solved it either, mostly by declining to try.
Apple’s answer is a stack of design decisions that each address one attack on bystander privacy, and reading them in order tells you the threat model the team was working against.
No audio recording is created or stored at any point. Raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, to apps, to the user, and to Apple itself, because the S11 chip carries a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio separately from the rest of the system and then deletes it. Audio Intelligence does not identify or attribute speakers, by design, which means the output cannot tell you who said what. Siri Recap produces a high-level summary rather than a transcript, and Apple says it is built to exclude financial information and government-assigned identifiers. Live Rewind plays an audible chime when it is invoked, even if the watch is on silent, and shows a full-display animation and a microphone indicator so that people nearby can both hear and see that it fired. Each feature is opt-in individually, and Siri Recap can be switched on and off from Control Center. Snippets and summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app with iCloud syncing, and Apple states it cannot read them.
The chime is the detail worth sitting with. Making a privacy feature audible to third parties costs Apple something. It makes the product slightly worse for the user, who now announces every time they missed a sentence, and it exists purely for people who are not Apple’s customers. That is the same reasoning that put a hardware indicator light on the Mac’s camera, and it is a reasonable proxy for whether a company took the bystander question seriously or wrote a policy page about it.
Where the audio actually goes
The chain is worth spelling out because the marketing compresses it. The watch microphone feeds the Secure Exclave on the S11. Processing then draws on the Apple Intelligence models running on the paired iPhone, and on Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s own footnotes confirm the last part: certain Audio Intelligence features rely on server-side models and are therefore subject to daily usage limits, Live Rewind and Siri Recap included. Apple also says expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future.
That is a meaningful disclosure buried in small type. It tells you that the summarization is not fully local, that Apple is metering it, and that a paid tier for Apple Intelligence is now a stated plan rather than a rumor. It also explains part of the EU absence, though not all of it. Siri AI on watchOS is likewise held back from the EU at launch.
The sensing upgrade underneath
The health hardware got the larger rebuild and less of the attention. The new Health Sensing System pairs redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11, and the practical result is that heart rate is now sampled every five seconds all day rather than intermittently, using larger and more power-efficient green LEDs. Heart rate variability is measured up to twenty-four times more often, split into a recovery variant for daily stress signals and an overall variant for longer-run cardiovascular context. Apple ran an accuracy study across more than a thousand participants against competing wearables and claims the top result.
Continuous sampling is what makes the new readiness score possible. It combines recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score into a single figure from zero to ten with one of four recommendations, from Recover through Go For It, and it updates through the day rather than settling at breakfast. The scoring model came out of the Apple Heart and Movement Study. Whoop, Oura and Garmin have sold readiness for years; Apple arriving with a free version attached to the largest wearable installed base in the world is a commercial event for those companies, whatever the relative merits of the algorithms.
A redesigned Health app follows later this year, adding an Insights tab and a Longevity tab with a Health Age metric, plus movement evaluations for flexibility, strength and balance that use vision models on the iPhone alongside watch heart rate data. The line that matters commercially is the last one: Apple will sell lab panels covering more than fifty biomarkers for $119 through the Health app, drawn at roughly 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the United States. Apple is now a booking channel for blood work.
Ultra 4 buyers get the battery numbers. Fifty hours of everyday use, eighty-four in Low Power Mode, twenty-five hours of workout tracking with full GPS and heart rate, and forty-five hours in the Max Extended mode, which Apple notes is generally enough to finish a hundred-mile race. Fifteen minutes on the charger returns eighteen hours. Series 12 stays at twenty-four hours of everyday use, with outdoor workout life up a quarter to ten hours, and adds Ceramic Shield 2 on the aluminum models along with a returning ceramic case in pearl white and night blue.
AirPods 5, and the price nobody raised
AirPods 5 start at $129 with active noise cancellation included, in an open-ear design with no silicone tip. The version with the Wireless Charging Case and stem volume swipe is $149, rated at five hours with ANC on and twenty-two with the case. Apple says the new multiport acoustic architecture and revised algorithms remove up to fifty percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC did, and that model cost $179. Noise cancellation therefore got fifty dollars cheaper and materially better in one step.
Set that against the iPhone, where every storage tier moved up. The wearables held their prices while the phone did not, and the reason is visible in the feature list rather than the cost sheet. Audio Intelligence requires a Series 12 or an Ultra 4. Siri AI on the wrist requires watchOS 27 on recent hardware. Live Translation and hands-free Siri on AirPods require a current iPhone. Apple is trying to move an installed base onto devices that can run ambient AI, and installed base is bought with flat pricing. The phone can absorb a component shock because people replace phones anyway. The accessories cannot, because nobody has to buy them at all.
The feature that will decide how this is remembered is not readiness or the lab panels. It is whether a wrist device that summarizes conversations survives its first year without a story about someone using it on a person who did not know. Apple has done more engineering on that question than any competitor has. Whether design restraint holds up against a hundred million wrists is a different question, and it gets answered in public.
