GitLab have made an announcement that they are ditching plans of switch to bare metal and stay in the cloud. Main reasons for staying in the cloud:
- Designing your network, performance tuning and debugging everything works better in the cloud.
- Elasticity and recovery from hardware failure, and migration and multi-data center high availability will become concerns on bare metal.
- Disastrous experiences with Ceph and Gluster on bare metal.
- Looking at total cost of ownership of cloud vs steel isn’t as simple as comparing the hosting costs, hardware and facilities.
- Move to metal is loss of support.
