Market Insight: Quantum Meets HPC in the Cloud

October 24, 2017 By Technologies.org Leave a Comment

While quantum computing technology is still years from maturity stage the hybrid quantum-HPC systems emerge as intermittent solution combining the best of both worlds and enabling researchers to solve complex problems more efficiently by distributing tasks between quantum device and high performance computing system. The hybrid quantum-HPC market is happening right now, this is a conclusion of a new market study Hybrid Quantum-HPC Market Forecast.

While primary access to quantum device is still a privilege of top research facilities, access to the quantum computing over the cloud has already been pioneered by IBM. IBM has recently launched a new quantum computing division “IBM Q”, a move that might be a turning point in commercialization of quantum computing technology. IBM has started selling access to its new 17-Qubit quantum computer over the cloud and updated its Quantum Experience cloud with a new API to increase the abilities of researchers to build sophisticated applications with its experimental quantum computing system.

In another development D-Wave Systems Inc and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the largest DoE science and energy laboratory, announced an agreement in July 2017 aimed at advancing hybrid computing applications, particularly targeted at helping accelerate future exascale applications. Under the agreement, ORNL scientists get cloud access to a D-Wave 2000Q system for exploration of hybrid computing architectures as a way to achieve better solutions for scientific applications.
