The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been repeatedly identified as one of EU biggest polluters

February 22, 2023 By admin Leave a Comment

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been repeatedly identified as one of EU biggest polluters. In 2020, the company climbed to the 6th position in the ranking of top EU carbon emitters, according to Transport & Environment (T&E) which analysed official EU emissions data. Although MSC has taken some steps to improve its environmental record, such as investing in more fuel-efficient vessels and implementing energy-saving measures on board its ships, there is still much more that the company could do to address its impact on the environment.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been repeatedly identified as one of EU biggest polluters

One of the key issues with the shipping industry is its use of heavy fuel oil, which is a major contributor to air pollution and climate change. MSC has been criticized for its continued use of heavy fuel oil, despite the availability of cleaner alternative fuels. This is an area where the company could make significant improvements to its environmental record.

Some shipping companies have already started to implement emission-reducing solutions, and the technology is continuing to develop rapidly. MSC could follow suit and invest in more sustainable shipping technologies to reduce its carbon emissions. In addition to using cleaner fuels, there are other measures that shipping companies could implement to reduce their environmental impact. For example, they could use more efficient shipping routes, reduce their speed, and implement stricter waste management practices.

These findings highlight the urgent need for shipping companies to take more significant steps towards reducing their environmental impact. While MSC has taken some steps to improve its environmental record, there is still more that the company could do to address its impact on the environment. The shipping industry as a whole needs to take significant steps towards reducing its carbon emissions, and it is vital that companies like MSC take a leading role in this effort. By investing in more sustainable technologies and practices, the shipping industry can mitigate its impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.
